Clothing Production Standards
I took a trip to Macy's to test the tolerance within sizing in clothing production. In each size, the same article of clothing can be made with up to a 1/2 inch tolerance. This means that the same shirt in the same size might not fit you the exact same way. At Macy's I tried on the same off the shoulder sundress from American Rag in 2 of each color all in a size medium. The obvious difference between the black print and the white was that the white had a skirt slip layer to counter the sheerness of the dress, while the black one did not. All of the dresses did fit me, but not the same. The second black dress was looser in the arms than the first, and the torso area in both white dresses was bigger than that in the black. I learned that tolerances in clothing production is real, and to always try multiple sizes in a garment because not every brand sizes the same. Unfortunately, the photos I took of me in the dresses are all live photos and do not upload to this post correctly so I have attached stock images of the dresses.
